Besides having great museums, beaches and nice people, Brazil also have some of the best Urban arts and grafitti painters in the world. And this tour is for you, who wants to check some of these marvelous arts scaterred around the city of Rio.
During our tour we will give you the opportunity to understand and enjoy how the Street Art began with the tags in the suburbs of Rio and developed into a wide variety of forms of art expression today, when Rio got to be one of the Mecas of global Street Art Scene.
Since this is a walking tour, you’ll start the tour in front of the meeting point at Olinda Rio Hotel, where you will go with your tour guide by Metro (Subway, included in the tour) to the Gloria neighborhood. Your first visit will be at the Selaron Steps, with artwork done by a Chilean artist known as Jorge Selarón. It is a huge mosaic with tiles from different parts of the world spanning 400 steps in Lapa area, also known as “The Great Madness”.
From there you will take the VLT (the new tramline in downtown) to your next stop, which will be at the Olympic Boulevard, from there you will walk by and see all the new different art works in the area, including the very large (it’s in the Guinness Book of Records!) 3,000-square-meter ‘Etnias’ mural.
The guide take you then to the Praça Mauá. The square marks the beginning of Avenida Rio Branco avenue and also of the Port Region, the Central area of Rio. Around the square there are important buildings, such as the Rio Art Museum (MAR) and the Museum of Tomorrow.
Finally, you’ll go to the Pedra do Sal. Originally a slave village, Pedra do Sal is a place with special significance to Cariocas of African descent and fans of samba and choro music. It’s a culturally rich area, full of art, and definitely worth a visit and stopping by for a cold beer!
Your guide will walk you back to the subway station and show you where you need to get off to return to your accommodation. For those staying in the center of the city the guide will give you the best tips for bars, restaurants and museums if you want to explore the area after the tour.
